Put the WW in WWDC

This is the year that Apple could put "WW" in WWDC.

Apple could truly make the conference World Wide.

There are a bunch of things happening at once.

Sadly, my country is not a place that many developers feel safe visiting.

They aren't wrong. People from other countries are being detained or arrested without any warning, reason, or recourse.

I love the parts of WWDC that aren't a part of WWDC. The parts that happen because so many Apple Developers gather once a year.

But I don't go to WWDC for the sessions.

Don't get me wrong - I love the WWDC sessions.

I love the technical recorded sessions. They are as long as they need to be and no longer.

Last year these sessions were all released at the beginning of the second day. (Yay Apple - thanks for listening to community feedback).

These sessions are an amazing resource. Many of them I watch over and over because they are so well-crafted and dense.

Time and time again someone will say to me, "why wasn't that in the session?" I'll smile and tell them that it was but there was so much in the session they may have missed it.

I will still go out to Cupertino the week of WWDC for the community and to discuss the new things with other developers. It's an expensive trip for me but one that is consistently worth it.

I haven't applied to go to the event in years.

The in-person event has become a watch party. The people gathered there are watching a video that was recorded at an earlier time.

Some of those developers then get to spend time with evangelists and engineers in person (and I do feel FOMO out of not getting to do that) - but the main resources are on-line live sessions that Apple has been running during WWDC.

Oh. About that. I have two suggestions for those online live sessions.

First, it would be better if they were run a week or two later once we've had a chance to download the new tools and frameworks and taken the new APIs for a spin. That's when we'll have questions. Right now the live sessions run before we really know what questions to ask or what suggestions to make.

Second, it would be great if the valuable content of these sessions could be captured and made available on the WWDC site.

And now to my big ask.

Now that the in-person event is mainly a watch party for the keynote and state of the union, Apple should consider running watch parties in other countries and continents.

Send Apple folks to these other locations and show appreciation for the developers around the world.

Make the WorldWide Developers Conference WorldWide.
